21th may 2018: European Day of Natura 2000

A European day to celebrate Natura 2000, a net of 27.000 sites and protected areas covering more than one million of square kilometres of terrestrial and marine ecosystems across Europe. The aim of this day is to celebrate the outstanding importance of this net, created to protect nature and biodiversity and to enhance its economic value. This event allows to increase the public awareness and involve citizens and stakeholders, in agreement with one of the four action lines of Natura 2000.

The 21th of May has been chosen to remember two important events in the frame of environment’s protection: the approval of the Habitat Directive by the European Union and the statement of the LIFE Programme, which promoted and financed many conservation actions for species and habitats. This day is part of the wider “Green Week” frame.

The project LIFE STOPVESPA will remember the European Day by highlighting the importance of Natura 2000 during a conference, which will be held in Genoa – Sarzano - the 20th of May, in the frame of ApiAmo, an event to promote the World Bee Day (link).
