“Vespa velutina and other invasive invertebrates species: 3 days of meetings and exchange on the Asian hornet.

 

The event “Vespa velutina and other invasive invertebrates species”, organized by the COLOSS Velutina Task Force and by the LIFE STOPVESPA Project, has been held in Turin from the 21st to the 23rd of March. The event allowed to share the knowledge about the presence of Vespa velutina in Europe and to present the results obtained by the LIFE STOPVESPA Project during four years of activity in Italy.

The speeches of Angelo Salsi (EASME – European Commission), Peter Neumann (CoLOSS), Piero Genovesi and Lucilla Carnevali (ISPRA) allowed to provide a whole overview of the issues associated with the presence of invasive alien species. The organizers are grateful to the people who contributed to this event and to the speakers of each sessions, which allowed to improve the knowledge on different aspects about Vespa velutina and on management strategies in different European countries.

The event point out the importance of an integrated management strategy to tackle the problem of Vespa velutina, besides the maintenance of cooperative networks among researchers, beekeepers, stakeholders and decision makers in order to allow an efficient management of this invasive species.
